In March 2024, Irvine voters approved Measure D, a charter amendment that made changes to the Irvine City Council election process.
The measure brings two key changes:
The goal is to create more localized representation and engagement in city governance. Irvine was previously the largest city in California, by population size, that did not elect council members by district.
For years, California cities have been transitioning from the at-large system to district elections. Voting rights groups have advocated for this change to promote more effective representation for all demographic groups the city.
Council members will still serve four-year terms, while the mayor will continue to be elected at large for a two-year term.
District 2 includes Cypress Village, Woodbury, Portola Springs, and the Great Park Neighborhoods. With 25,784 registered voters, District 2 reflects Irvine’s diverse mix of cultures. This district is notable for its substantial Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population that constitutes the majority demographic. District 2 also has a balanced mix of approximately 52% renters and 48% homeowners.
It’s important that we have a City Council representative who knows our community and will be a strong voice for all residents in the district. William Go is the most experienced candidate in District 2 who has already been doing the work for the past several years as a city committee member, commissioner, and successful business owner.
